Single Phase Transformers

A single phase transformer is one of several types of static electrical devices (transformers) that transfer energy via inductive coupling between its winding circuits. Basically, single phase transformers consist of two coils of electrical wire—the primary winding and the secondary winding—wrapped together around a closed core circuit made of magnetic iron. The windings are electrically isolated from each other, but are magnetically linked through the core, thus allowing electrical power to transfer from one coil to the other. In most designs, a single phase transformer’s primary winding is connected to the input voltage supply, and converts this electrical power into a magnetic field. The secondary winding then transforms this magnetic field into electrical power at the required output voltage. Single phase transformers can increase or decrease the input voltage received. Transformers that increase this voltage are known as “step-up transformers;” single phase transformers that decrease the voltage are called “step-down transformers.” A third type, “impedance transformers,” produces the same voltage as it receives—these transformers are generally used for impedance matching or the isolation of directly connected electrical circuits.
