About HVAC Systems

HVAC systems work by controlling temperatures through heating and cooling, including humidity control and air distribution and movement. Equipment includes air handlers, heat pumps, boilers, air conditioners, furnaces, and chillers. There are also air handling units, filters, condenser coils, air supply ducts, and return air ducts. Heating systems include hot water boilers, forced air furnaces and electric heat pumps. Most boilers work by using heated water or steam, which then travels through pipes and into radiators or radiated floor systems that give off heat to warm the room. There are also boilers that utilize gas, oil and electricity. Forced air systems (forced air furnaces) distribute heated air through a series of ducts then expels the air through vents. Temperature is controlled by a thermostat. Ventilation involves the replacement or exchange of air (using both outside and indoor air) in a space, which contributes to indoor air quality including humidity control, oxygen replenishment, and the removal of dust, odors, gases and pollutants. Both natural and mechanical or forced methods are used for ventilation systems. Air conditioning controls humidity levels and replaces the warm air inside your home or building with cool air. Types include central air conditioning (forced air), window air conditioners, portable air conditioners, and split (ductless) air conditioners. Central air conditioners are comprised of utilize supply and return ducts to circulate cooled air.
