Contracting rings (contracting seal rings) are used to create a shaft seal with the inner dimension of the ring contacting the shaft or rod. The pressure differential keeps the ring “seated” and forms the seal. Contracting rings are used when the groove is in the housing. Contracting rings are used in many industries: contracting rings can found in aerospace in the engines of commercial aircraft, power generation equipment, and even the nuclear industry.
