Thermal Spraying

Thermal Spraying is a coating process in which melted or heated materials are sprayed onto a surface. The feedstock is heated by electrical or chemical means.

Thermal spraying can provide thick coatings (up to several mm) over larger areas and at higher deposition rates than other coating processes. Available coating materials include metals, alloys, plastics, ceramics and composites. These materials are fed to the spraying device in powder or wire form, heated to a molten or semimolten state, and accelerated toward the substrate to be coated in the form of micrometer-sized particles. The resulting coatings are created by the accumulation of numerous sprayed particles. The coated surface does not generally heat up significantly in the coating process, allowing the coating of flammable substances.

Thermal spraying is most commonly used to coat structural materials. Such coatings provide protection against high and low temperatures, corrosion, erosion, and wear. They can also change the appearance of the surface, alter its electrical or tribological properties, or replace worn surface material.
