Aluminum Anodizing

The Aluminum Anodizing creates an oxide film on the surface of a part that is uniform and denser than it would be through a natural oxidization process. It is the chemical process of coating a metal to protect it, or to produce a better looking final product through electrolysis.

Aluminum Anodizing uses and electrolytic passivation process to expand the thickness of the oxide layer on the surface of the aluminum. Aluminum is well suited to anodizing but other metals can also be anodized, including titanium, zinc, and magnesium.

Advantages of Aluminum Anodizing

Aluminum anodizing serves two primary purposes: to enhance the appearance of a part or product, and to enhance the functionality of a part. Products that commonly make use of aluminum anodizing include mp3 players, satellites, pots and pans, cameras, carabiners, escalators, flashlights, aluminum roofs, and even the Sears Tower.

Anodized aluminum surfaces have a better resistance to corrosion as well as wear resistance, and the process is often used to increase the surface hardness. Anodized aluminum surfaces allow better adhesion for glue and paint than non-anodized aluminum.

Aluminum anodizing for cosmetic appearance is typically used to create a porous surface to allow dyes to sink into the surface of the aluminum (and typically need to be sealed afterward to increase the longevity of color on the dyed aluminum) or to create a transparent coating to enhance the sheen or gloss of the aluminum.

Aluminum anodizing is one of the most environmentally friendly metal finishing options, producing no heavy metals and few if any harmful environmental effects, depending on the anodizing process used.
