Prison doors are a specific application of hollow metal doors used in detention facilities. Prison doors must meet ASTM standards for the security level of the facility (security levels 1 – 4) up to and including maximum security standards. Prison doors must be capable of withstanding a “sustained attempt” to break them down, in addition to other requirements.

Prison Door Specifications

The primary requirement of prison doors is one of security: the metal door must be resistant to a sustained assault with any kind of object that might reasonably be obtained by inmates — including metal benches and tables. However, prison doors generally need to meet several additional specifications in addition to the ability to withstand a blunt assault.
